A Very Special Veterans Day - 2022
Hello Family,
Yes, it's been over a year since a new Coppock family blog was published. We had 4 weddings, lots of travel (after COVID restrictions were lifted), and the creative juices just weren't flowing. However, I am very happy to resume what I hope will be more interesting family stories in the months ahead.
Before we recognize our fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers who were veterans, I have a very special announcement: last evening I was notified that my application to the Sons of the American Revolution had been APPROVED! 😀 🇺🇸 This has been a work in progress for over 3 years, with lots of genealogy research needed for the application. Needless to say, this Veterans Day is a very special one for me, and for our family. To qualify, a candidate must supply hard evidence that he is a blood relative of a Revolutionary War patriot. Our "patriot" is William Jay. Here is the story.
William Jay was born September 12, 1745, in Winchester, Virginia. He served as a Private in the 4th Regiment of Artillery for the Continental Forces. He was a member of the cavalry company under Captain Zachary Brooks, Edgefield County, SC. He died February 28, 1797 in Newberry, SC. He was a cotton planter, farmer, and landowner (100+ acres). He married Elizabeth Layton in 1763, and among their 6 children was Anna Jay.
Anna Jay is my 4th great grandmother, wife of John Coppock (1766-1828). Anna Jay was born May 5, 1772, in Newberry, SC. She died April 9, 1828. Anna and John had 11 children, among them Joseph Coppock, our direct ancestor.
The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution was founded in 1889. SAR is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and promoting education to our future generations. Any male 18 years or older who can prove blood lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership.
There is a "sister" organization: the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). If anyone in the family is interested in applying to either organization, let me know. I will provide you with the data needed to complete an application.
Now, let us remember our other ancestors who served their country with honor and pride.
