"The Three Little Ones Grow Up"
In previous blogs we learned of Arnold and Ethel's wedding day, their two sons (Ashton and Clyde), and their subsequent marriages in June of 1939 (Dorothy and Helen, respectively). The history part of the last blog ended with a picture of the entire family in 1949 (below). Today, we'll explore those "three little ones" in the front row.
Darrell Ashton Coppock was 5 years and 11 months old in August of '49. He was ready to begin 1st grade at Franklin Elementary School in Le Mars. He went was very active in music and drama in High School, graduating in 1961. He majored in music education at Wayne State College, fell in love with Kathy Lindsteadt from Norfolk, Nebraska; and they were married on April 13, 1963. They have one son, David.
Janice Kay Coppock (center front in the 1949 photo) was 3 years and 9 months old. Jan, as she was called for most of her life, had an active high school career as a member of the girls' drill team, a drum majorette for the band, and a cheerleader. She graduated from Le Mars High School in 1964, and attended Stevens College in Columbia, MO. She met William (Bill) Bates who played football for the University of Missouri , and they married in Le Mars on September 7, 1968. Bill passed away April 21, 1989; Jan on January 28. 2001. Their 3 children are Kim Bates Scott, Suzanne Bates Jackson, and William (Bill) Bates IV.
Connie Colleen Coppock (far left in the 1949 photo) was 3 years and 2 months old in the '49 photo. Connie is the only child of Dorothy and Ashton. She attended school in Le Mars, and she had just finished her junior year when the family moved to Northglenn, Colorado. Connie graduated from Northglenn High School in 1964 and from Colorado Women's College with a degree in education. Connie married Stephen Dutka in Westminster, CO, on October 7, 1977. They have two sons, Christopher and Matthew.
As readers will note, the Coppock's who descended from Arnold and Ethel are a small family. It is therefore important for the present generation to at least know something of their family roots. In blogs that follow, we will attempt to get to know each other a bit better. Every now and then, I will incorporate a "Meet Your Family" blog that will focus on some of our not-so-distant relatives. It is my hope that this won't be boring or tedious, but it will help us all know one another through stories or recollections. Of course, some of our favorite family stories will continue.
